The guided tour of the exhibition allows to illustrate the macchiaioli painting, from its initial season to the great masterpieces of the nineteenth century, through numerous works from the most important Italian museums, institutions and private collections. The story begins with the academic formation of the protagonists, through the romantic and purist works of Giuseppe Bezzuoli and Luigi Mussini, but also of the young and future macchiaioli such as Silvestro Lega, Giovanni Fattori, Cristiano Banti and Odoardo Borrani. The interest in the renewal of figurative languages, which found one of his hearths at the Caffè Michelangiolo in Florence in the mid-nineteenth century and the affirmation of the "stain", at the exposition at Promotrice di Belle Arti in Turin before and at National exhibition of Florence in 1861, allow us to dwell on the experimentation of color and light conducted en plein air by these artists, applied to historical subjects and landscapes. To revive the climate of the time the description of the environments in which they loved to realize their works: from the busy summers in Castiglioncello, at the Martelli estate, to the autumn afternoons of Piagentina suburbs protected from the transformations of modern Florence.
