The Fondazione CRC and the GAM – Galleria Civica d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea continue their collaboration begun last year with the exhibition Io non amo la natura and now present, beginning Wednesday, 24 October 2018 to Sunday, 20 January 2019, at the Complesso Monumentale di San Francesco in Cuneo, a new group show dedicated to Italian art from the 1950s. All works come from the collections of the Museum in Turin.

The exhibition Noi continuiamo l’evoluzione dell’arte. Informal Art from the GAM – Turin Collections is curated by Riccardo Passoni, Director of GAM Turin, and presents a selection of around 60 works by Italian painters and sculptors active after World War II.

The itinerary stems from the desire to outline a comprehensive study on a series of artistic experiences that appeared following the fall of Fascism and which can be traced back to a movement known as Informal art.

In the 1950s, a group of artists who decided to free painting and sculpture from the canon of figurative or abstract representation began a new investigation founded on reflections deriving from signs, gestures, and substance.

The exhibition itinerary gathers works by key players from that unrepeatable artistic period: from Alberto Burri to Lucio Fontana, Carla Accardi to Giuseppe Capogrossi, along with the Gruppo degli Otto (Afro, Birolli, Corpora, Moreni, Morlotti, Santomaso, Turcato, and Vedova), all united around the art critic Lionello Venturi.

In fact, it was this critic from Modena who provided a definition on the particular practice of these artists, describing the rift between this group and art movements from the period while specifying the willingness of these artists to leave behind the realist-abstract pairing.

Alongside a reading of painting phenomena from the time, the exhibition offers a selection of the greatest experiences from those years in sculpture as well, with works by Mirko Basaldella, Alberto Burri, Ettore Colla, Pietro Consagra, Nino Franchina, Franco Garelli, Umberto Mastroianni, Giuseppe Tarantino.
The event is installed in the evocative Complesso Monumentale di San Francesco, restored and reopened to the city in 2011 thanks to an important financial contribution by the Fondazione CRC.

“This exhibition offers us the opportunity to explore a historic period when Italy embarked on a new phase of artistic expression,” states Riccardo Passoni. “We will have the chance to reread in a comprehensive way the role of the protagonists of that rich artistic period who intentionally investigated new themes and international experiences.”

The exhibition will be accompanied by a catalogue published by Sagep.
