Collecting Asia. Questioning the exotica and repositioning aesthetic canons
- Event
- 25 February 2022 - 17 March 2022
On Wednesday 16 March at 6.30 pm MAO will host Collecting Asia. Questioning the exotica and repositioning aesthetic canons: Davide Quadrio and Giovanni Carlo Federico Villa, respectively directors of MAO and Palazzo Madama, and Paola Gribaudo, President of the Accademia Albertina, will be in dialogue with some of the most important directors of Asian art museums and curators globally, such as Mami Kataoka (Mori Art Museum), Suhanya Raffel (M +), Laura Vigo (Musée des Beaux-Arts de Montréal), Roobina Karode (KMNA) and Myna Mukherjee (Engendered).
This event aims tostimulate a reflection on the legacies of Hub India | Classical Radical, a project curated by Myna Mukherjee and Davide Quadrio for Artissima International Fair of Contemporary Art of Torino. The core of the project was a three-part exhibition produced in collaboration with Fondazione Torino Musei and Accademia Albertina di Belle Arti di Torino: MAO, Palazzo Madama and Accademia Albertina displayed the works of 65 among the most important contemporary and modern artists from the Indian subcontinent
The event, moderated by Anna Somers Cocks, art historian and founder of The Art Newspaper, represents an opportunity to reflect and debate on international museum systems that deal with collections of Asian or non-European art in different contexts. The panel will analyze multiple and transversal narratives concerning the artistic "object" of non-European origin, its ritual and religious implications and its continuous evolution in the global contemporary context.
On the occasion, Davide Quadrio will present the program of the Museum for the next years.
